Canister System Tips & Tricks Series, Part 1: Understanding Strange Spray Patterns

The canister system is highly efficient for adhesive applications, yet occasional mishaps occur. This article is part of a series aiming to highlight common industry errors and offer solutions to avoid them.

Identifying Adhesive Spray Issues

Are you experiencing peculiar adhesive spray patterns? Do you notice tails, unevenness, a lack of pattern, or sporadic spraying? These issues might stem from various mistakes in the application process.

Troubleshooting Techniques

  1. No Pattern or Uneven Spray:

    • Check the front end of your gun to ensure a spray tip is correctly installed.
    • Unclean or clogged tips may cause uneven patterns. Remove the tip, clean it using a mild solvent, and ensure the orifice is free from debris. Replace with a new tip if necessary.
  2. Tails in Spray Patterns:

    • Heavy coverage at the top and bottom of the spray with a gap in the middle suggests excessive adhesive flow.
    • Adjust the nut behind the trigger to reduce the flow if there’s an overload.
  3. Spluttering Spray:

    • Cold temperatures can lead to spluttering spray. Move the canister to a warmer area, ensuring the temperature is above 60°F (15°).
    • Gently agitate the canister to bring the adhesive back into a workable solution.

Preventive Measures

Maintaining the right environment for canisters is crucial to prevent such issues:

  • Store canisters in a warmer area, away from the floor, using pallet racking, carts, or heated blankets to maintain optimal temperatures.
